Yesterday I had a site visit with the Alamo Caregiver Teleconnection (ACT). ACT exemplifies what we set out to do with the Family and Informal Caregiver Initiative. That is it is bringing real information, learning and services to thousands of caregivers through many different channels. This is a multi-service, multi-partner, multi-connection caregiver support and service program initially serving the San Antonio/Bexar County Texas area but now expanding to include Austin and the Rio Grande Valley. The partnership of participating agencies is strong and growing stronger featuring the WellMed Charitable Foundation, the Bexar Area Agency on Aging, Jewish Family Services, Caregiver SOS and others. Programs include a terrific website which has had over 10 million hits during the last year but has hosted over 300,000 user sessions, that is people participating in its on-line programs during the same time. ACT features tele-learning and support group opportunities which have involved over 6,200 individuals during the last year in nearly 100 telephonic learning sessions. Hundreds of website and tele-learning participants have also taken advantages of the programs great hands-on services provided by Jewish Family Services of Bexar County, the San Antonio Food Bank, San Antonio Independent Living Services, and many others. Beside services provided on the phone or the offices of its partners the program also operates several centers on its own (formerly operated by Leeza’s Place) and offers a continuing series of in-person programs at two senior centers operated jointly by the City of San Antonio and WellMed.
