ALERT: The Weinberg Foundation’s good name is being wrongly used in a phishing scam. Impersonating a Facebook friend on Facebook Messenger, the scammers claim the Weinberg Foundation is giving money to people. Often identifying themselves as some sort of “agent,” the scammers then encourage people to pay money or provide information to get money from the Weinberg Foundation. This is not authorized by nor affiliated with the Weinberg Foundation. It is a fraudulent scheme to steal people’s money and identity.

We have been aware of this scam for some time and have posted alerts on our website and Facebook page. We have also notified state and federal authorities, as well as Facebook.

Facebook has requested that we share the following with anyone who was contacted as part of the scam and who is willing to assist in this way:

  • Log on to www.messenger.com
  • click the thread they have with the impostor
  • copy the URL
  • Send the URL to cdemchak@hjweinberg.org

Facebook has communicated to our attorneys that the URL may help Facebook disable the imposter account.

Please contact Craig Demchak, Director of Communications, at cdemchak@hjweinberg.org, if you have information that may help the investigation.
