The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States, is dedicated to meeting the basic needs of people experiencing poverty. In 2022, the Foundation expects to provide approximately $150 million in total grant activity supporting nonprofits that provide direct services in the areas of Housing, Health, Jobs, Education, and Community Services. Grants support organizations that serve a range of populations, including older adults, women at risk and their children, people with disabilities, and veterans, as well as the Jewish community.

The Foundation administers the majority of its funding in its priority communities: Baltimore, Chicago, Hawaiʻi, Israel, New York City, Northeastern Pennsylvania, and San Francisco. This includes supporting nonprofits serving federally designated rural areas within, or adjacent to, these priority communities. All of these locations represent personal ties to the life and legacy of Harry Weinberg, as well as communities where Weinberg Foundation trustees reside and provide leadership. Since 1990, the Foundation has distributed grants totaling more than $2.7 billion.

Position Summary

The investment associate position is a unique opportunity to work directly with senior management in a small, flat investment organization. The Foundation’s portfolio is invested globally across a broad range of asset classes and strategies, including public equity, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, real estate, resources, credit, and fixed income. The candidate must be collaborative, creative, intellectually curious, and passionate about investing.

Overall Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the investment team to help generate attractive long-term real returns for the investment portfolio while remaining within the risk tolerance of the Foundation.
  • Provide support to senior staff in all aspects of the investment process.
  • Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to managing due diligence, performance measurement, data management, and asset allocation research.
  • In addition to sourcing, researching, and monitoring outstanding managers that will be long-term partners for the Foundation, the investment associate will also develop and research investment themes that will add value to our long-term real returns.
  • Special projects as directed by senior management.
  • Serve as a member of the investment team and participate in all aspects of managing the portfolio.
  • Occasional travel to meetings and events.

Skills and Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree and excellent academic credentials (required) – a degree in finance or economics is preferred.
  • Two to four years of professional, related full-time work experience – investment banking, investment consulting, private equity, or investment management experience is strongly preferred.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work closely with an experienced and dedicated investment team.
  • Broad understanding of investment managers and strategies ideally combined with hands-on manager selection/due diligence experience for a large multi-asset class portfolio.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to comprehend broader market trends (including capital flows and valuation levels) in not only domestic markets but international and emerging markets as well; a knack for integrating “top down” and “bottom up” perspectives into specific investment recommendations.
  • The ability to establish effective working relationships with external managers and other constituents is important.
  • Demonstrate a strong appreciation for the endowment model of investing, the active management process, and alternative investment strategies.
  • Holding or working towards obtaining a CFA/CFP/MBA/CAIA is also preferred.
  • Motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic and consistent attention to detail.
  • Needs to have a sense of humor and humility.
