The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, in conjunction with The Abell Foundation, announced today its SummerREADS program at the following Library Project schools:

  • Arlington Elementary/Middle
  • The Henderson-Hopkins School
  • The Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary
  • Moravia Park Elementary
  • Southwest Baltimore Charter
  • Thomas Johnson Elementary/Middle

In partnership with the Abell Foundation, the Weinberg Foundation, along with the Baltimore Elementary and Middle School Library Project, Baltimore City Public Schools, the Maryland Out-of-School-Time Network (MOST), and Reading Partners has created an opportunity for students and their families to increase time spent reading and participating in literacy-based activities over the summer.

From June 23 through August 7, children and their families can visit their participating school library to earn prizes for reading, check out books, participate in STEM activities, join a reading circle, and meet special guests. In addition, a healthy and well-balanced breakfast and lunch will be served every day.

The purpose of these events is to introduce parents to the program, provide an overview of summer activities, and send students home with 12 brand new books that they have selected. SummerREADS is part of the Weinberg Foundation’s larger Summer Youth Initiative, a $1 million commitment to provide support for high quality summer programs that blend academic learning with enriching activities to increase positive social behavior and academic achievement across Baltimore.
