Baltimore Library Project Book Drive raises more than $20,000!

Baltimore Library Project The Weinberg Foundation is excited to announce the results of the 7th annual community-wide Book Drive in support of the Baltimore Elementary and Middle School Library Project.

Online and cash donations totaling more than $20,000 will be used to purchase nearly 2,500 brand new, hardcover children’s books for this year’s soon-to-be renovated school library at James McHenry Elementary/Middle School.

The Weinberg Foundation has committed $10 million, of the total $30 million investment by all project partners, to build or transform up to 24 Baltimore City Public Schools libraries in an effort to strengthen academic achievement among students. To date, the Foundation and its more than 30 partners have completed 14 of these new spaces serving more than 6,000 students and their families.

This year, for the first time, the Foundation invited students at 10 current Library Project schools to participate in an essay contest in tandem with the Book Drive. Each participating school shared student-written essays on the topic—“Why I Love My Library.” Two winners, one elementary and one middle school student, were selected: Jaquan Chandler, a third grader at Commodore John Rodgers and Skyler Roy, a seventh grader at Hampden Elementary/Middle. The two winning schools will each receive $1,000 to use at First Book, and the two winning students will each receive a $50 gift card.

To stay up-to-date on all Library Project Book Drive developments, including the grand opening of James McHenry Elementary/Middle, visit www.baltimorelibraryproject.org, and follow #libraryproject on Facebook and Twitter.

Weinberg Foundation announces new program officer

Earl Millett

The Weinberg Foundation welcomes Earl Millett as the Foundation’s newest program officer. Millett will manage grants to nonprofits that serve low-income and vulnerable populations in the areas of older adults, workforce development, and basic human needs and health.

Prior to joining the Weinberg Foundation, Millett served as the Chief Operating Officer of Civic Works, a Baltimore-based nonprofit that transforms the lives of Baltimore residents through community service and skills development.

“During his time at Civic Works, Earl oversaw several programs, including services focused on meeting the needs of older adults,” said Aaron Merki, Managing Director, Programs and Grants and Program Director, Older Adult Services for the Weinberg Foundation. “We had the opportunity to work with Earl on one of the Foundation’s key initiatives—the expansion of the Housing Upgrades to Benefit Seniors (HUBS) project, which provides home modifications and repairs to help older adults remain independent. He is a highly regarded professional who has been one of Baltimore’s most effective nonprofit leaders for many years now, and we are thrilled to have him join the Weinberg Foundation team.”

Before joining Civic Works, Millett served with the Peace Corps in Ecuador as an environmental extension agent at the Charles Darwin Foundation. He earned his B.A. in Geography and Environmental Systems from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Millett is a member of the Greater Baltimore Committee Leadership Class of 2016 and a recipient of Smart CEO’s 2017 Executive Management Award. In addition, he is engaged in several volunteer roles, including the Green School of Baltimore’s PTO (Parent Teacher Organization).
