Co-Founder of Billions Institute announced as featured speaker for Community Gathering!

Becky Margiotta

The Foundation is thrilled to announce Becky Margiotta as the featured speaker for its Community Gathering—a celebration of the Foundation’s work, as well as its wonderful grantees and partners. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, November 14:

4:30-6:30 p.m.
Beth El Congregation
8101 Park Heights Avenue
Pikesville, Maryland 21208

Margiotta co-founded the Billions Institute with her friend Joe McCannon to answer one question: how can we engage one billion people to solve the world's biggest problems over the next 50 years? She is also responsible for creating the Skid Row School, which trains foundation and nonprofit executives how to effectively design and run large-scale change initiatives, and prior to that, she led the 100,000 Homes Campaign that mobilized 186 cities to house 105,000 people off their streets in just four years.

Please be on the lookout for your e-invitation later this summer!

If you do not live or work in the Baltimore area, please do not feel compelled to travel for this event. We will miss you, but we do not want people unnecessarily driving long distances.

Final evaluation report of Rapid Re-Housing Program

Baltimore Library ProjectIn 2014, the Weinberg Foundation’s Board approved an investment of $1.2 million over three years to expand Rapid Re-Housing for families in Baltimore City and conduct an evaluation of the program. Rapid Re-Housing is a short to medium-term intervention that combines case management with financial assistance. It is targeted to homeless households with moderate barriers who are unlikely to succeed in securing market-rate housing without this assistance.

St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) has been the Foundation’s partner for this program, concluding Year Three on June 30, 2017. The SVDP program, called “Front Door,” was designed to serve 65 families per year with a team of five staff: program director, two case managers, a housing specialist, and an employment specialist. As a result of the Foundation’s investment and the ability of SVDP to increase its capacity, a grant of more than $1 million was awarded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to increase the number of families served annually to 110. SVDP is partnering with House of Ruth on this expansion.

Abt Associates completed an evaluation report, which includes the following key findings:

  • 73 percent of families were still in permanent housing that they rented after six months (another 14 percent were staying with family or friends).
  • 93 percent of families did not return to homelessness after one year.
  • 64 percent of participants improved employment status between program entry and exit, by either securing employment or moving from part-time to full-time employment.
  • 57 percent of participants improved their monthly income over the course of the program; the average increase in monthly income was 27 percent.

Click here to see the full report.

The results of the study are largely positive, particularly returns to homelessness lower than the national average and a significant increase in income and employment. As a next step, the Board approved a grant of $550,000 over two years in July 2017 to continue building out the employment navigation component of Rapid Re-Housing.

He will also work with other program team members (representing the Foundation’s specific areas of giving) to collaborate with the Baltimore philanthropic, government, and business sectors, as well as neighborhoods and community groups.

SummerREADS returns to Library Project schools!

SummerREADS This summer, the Weinberg Foundation, in partnership with the Baltimore Elementary and Middle School Library Project, Baltimore City Public Schools, and Young Audiences, will host its 5th year of SummerREADS—a free, hands-on, drop-in program geared toward students, kindergarten through grade three (though all students are welcome to attend).

Every Monday through Friday (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) from July 2 through August 3, students will have the opportunity to check out books, earn prizes for reading, participate in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities, and interact with local enrichment partners at nine Library Project schools. In addition, a healthy and well-balanced breakfast and lunch will be served daily.

This year’s program will operate at the following schools:

  • Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle
  • Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle
  • George Washington Elementary
  • Harford Heights Elementary
  • Moravia Park Elementary
  • Morrell Park Elementary/Middle
  • Thomas Johnson Elementary/Middle
  • Westport Academy Elementary/Middle
  • Windsor Hills Elementary/Middle

The goal of SummerREADS is to provide students with safe and welcoming spaces, in which they are able to continue developing their reading skills during the summer months. Research confirms that reading on grade level is an important indicator for future academic and life success. Students from kindergarten through grade three are especially susceptible to “Summer Slide”—learning loss over the summer months—and spend much of the following school year trying to recover lost reading skills.
