15 Jewish camps awarded grants in second round of $12 million Yashar initiative to increase accessibility for campers and staff with disabilities

Yashar

In December, 15 Jewish camps across the country received grants as part of Foundation for Jewish Camp’s (FJC) next round of the Yashar initiative, supported by the Weinberg Foundation. In total, this round awarded $2.8 million in capital grants, as well as more than $300,000 in one-time program grants. The goal of the Yashar initiative is to increase accessibility for campers and staff with disabilities.

This is an important new step in the ongoing work of both FJC and the Weinberg Foundation in supporting camps as they work towards inclusion of all campers and staff, including those with disabilities. The current initiative—named “Yashar,” the Hebrew word for both “level” and “integrity”—aspires to significantly improve accessibility, providing funds for capital improvements, professional development, staff training, research, and evaluation. Yashar is intended to support a wide range of campers and staff, including individuals with autism spectrum disorder, as well as those with intellectual, developmental, physical, and sensory disabilities.

Participating camps from both rounds will gather in Baltimore at FJC’s biennial Leaders Assembly in March 2020. FJC has created a dedicated “Yashar Track” to advance the field’s conversation and practice around inclusion through workshops focused on creating sensory tools, camper intake, staff training, and vocational education programs. At the conference, dedicated time will be set aside specifically for inclusion professionals to meet together as a cohort.

The Yashar initiative will accept grant applications again in 2020 and 2021. To learn more, and to see a complete list of the second round of camps, click here.

Baltimore Summer Funding Collaborative announces $3.5 million for children and youth programs

Summer Funding Collaborative

The Baltimore Summer Funding Collaborative has awarded $3.5 million in grants to support 74 high-quality summer programs for children and youth living in low-income families throughout Baltimore City. The Collaborative is a partnership between public, private, and nonprofit institutions that aims to create summer program options for families, including academic support to reduce summer learning loss, youth work opportunities, and a variety of enrichment activities.

Collaborative members—some of Baltimore’s largest public, private, and nonprofit institutions—include the Abell Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Clayton Baker Trust, Constellation, Family League of Baltimore, France-Merrick Foundation, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, The Hinkey-Benson Family Fund, Lockhart Vaughan Foundation, Joseph & Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds, Under Armour, and United Way of Central Maryland. Baltimore’s Promise serves as the Collaborative’s administrative backbone.

The members of the Collaborative share a common goal: to fund high-quality summer programs that serve youth from families with low incomes in Baltimore City. Using a common application and review process, member organizations make their own funding decisions.

Here are some highlights from last year’s programs:

  • In 2019, the Collaborative provided a total investment of more than $3 million in grants to 89 programs, serving nearly 10,000 students.
  • The Weinberg Foundation’s $1.2 million funding commitment served more than 5,000 of those students through 48 programs.
  • The average daily attendance across all sites was 82 percent—higher than the 80 percent average recommended by the National Summer Learning Association.

Thanks to our wonderful partners in the Collaborative and to all of the grantee organizations for their exceptional work as part of this initiative and throughout the year. To view a complete list of the 2020 recipients, click here.

10,000 new books distributed among 15 Baltimore Library Project schools

Moravia Book Fair

Last summer, WMAR-2 News, in partnership with the Scripps Howard Foundation and with the help of a Weinberg Foundation Employee Giving grant, launched the “If You Give a Child a Book” campaign. The Employee Giving grant served as the “match” for the WMAR-2 News fundraising campaign. Thanks to its viewers and supporting business partners, WMAR-2 News raised a total of approximately $30,000, which has been used to purchase more than 10,000 new books for libraries of the Baltimore Elementary and Middle School Library Project!

Approximately 500 new books are now filling the shelves at each of the 15 Library Project schools. In addition, WMAR-2 and Scholastic—Scripps Howard Foundation’s national partner for the “If You Give a Child a Book” campaign—teamed up to host two book fairs at two Library Project schools, Moravia Park Elementary and The Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary. Each student at these schools received two “take home” books, in addition to the books received by their libraries.

The Weinberg Foundation also wishes to extend a very special thank you to long-time Library Project partner Heart of America, which assisted with the evaluation and selection of thousands of new books!

New grant opportunity for Jewish Federations embarking on local Jewish community studies

Jewish Federations of North America Logo

Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), in partnership with the Weinberg Foundation and the Jews of Color Field Building Initiative (JoC-FBI), recently announced a new grant opportunity for Federations embarking on local Jewish community studies. The goal of this initiative is to achieve better and more aligned data on measures of poverty and financial insecurity, as well as race and ethnicity, in the Jewish community. This data program grew out of discussions at the inaugural meeting of the National Affinity Group on Jewish Poverty in Chicago last year.

Ten Jewish Federations will have the opportunity to receive a financial incentive of $50,000 by including a standard set of questions related to poverty, race, and ethnicity within their community study, as well as committing to a plan to utilize the data. The core sets of questions are available upon request from the JFNA research department, and details on how to apply for a grant will be released soon. For more information on the grants and on local community studies in general, please contact Laurence Kotler-Berkowitz at Laurence.Kotler-Berkowitz@JewishFederations.org.
