Weinberg Foundation employees present $780,000 in grants

The Weinberg Foundation recently hosted its 13th Employee Giving Program. Started in the Foundation’s Hawaiʿi office more than 20 years ago, this grant program gives every employee of the Foundation—including all administrative and professional staff other than the president/chief executive officer—the opportunity to direct a $20,000 grant to a Baltimore-area nonprofit that aligns with the mission of the Weinberg Foundation. In 2022, the Foundation expects to distribute approximately $150 million to nonprofits dedicated to meeting the basic needs of vulnerable individuals and families experiencing poverty. Grants focus on supporting organizations in the areas of Housing, Health, Jobs, Education, and Community Services.

Weinberg Foundation grants $250,000 in emergency funding in response to Buffalo supermarket shooting

In response to the horrific and hate-fueled shooting at a supermarket located in the predominantly Black community of Kingsley in Buffalo, NY, the Weinberg Foundation has announced a total of $250,000 in emergency grants to organizations that are assisting victims and community members impacted by this tragedy.

RAND evaluation sheds positive light on the Weinberg Center for Elder Justice’s shelter model 

Each year, about one in six older adults experience abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation. Yet there are few options for older adults who can no longer safely stay in their homes or communities. Of the one in six adults older than 60 who experience elder abuse or mistreatment, up to nearly half will continue to be abused even after seeking help. Weinberg Foundation grantee and long-standing partner—The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Center for Elder Justice at the Hebrew Home in Riverdale (the Weinberg Center) is a national model for protecting older adults from abuse. 

 

To shed light on the potential benefits of this innovative model, the RAND Corporation undertook an initial evaluation of the Weinberg Center.

Weinberg Foundation grantee Breaking Ground celebrates opening of its new Betances Residence

Weinberg Foundation grantee Breaking Ground recently completed the construction of its latest housing development—The Betances Residence. This $100 million project creates 152 units of affordable and supportive housing for low-income older adults in the Bronx, New York City. Of those units, 30 percent are set aside for adults ages 55 and older who are experiencing homelessness. People 55 and older who experience homelessness are considered to be “older adults” because their health conditions tend to be similar to those who are 65 and older.

Weinberg Foundation announces communications leadership transition

The Weinberg Foundation recently announced the planned transition involving leadership of the Foundation’s communications team. Current Chief Communications Officer Craig Demchak will retire from the Weinberg Foundation effective October 31, 2022. He will be succeeded by Arin Gencer, who will begin her role as senior director of communications at the Weinberg Foundation on August 1, 2022. Ms. Gencer currently serves as senior advisor at the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

New faces at the Weinberg Foundation

Last month, the Weinberg Foundation expanded its finance team! Shaun Toyama joined the Hawaiʿi office as a senior accountant.
