Grantee and Baltimore nonprofit Art with a Heart led the development of a public art project at the Chella and Moise Safra Amigour Home for the Elderly in Ashkelon. Unveiled in late October, the three nine-foot, cylindrical sculptures of mosaic art involved over 1,000 community members in Baltimore and Ashkelon—and further cemented the special relationship between the two places, which have been sister cities for nearly two decades. The sculptures also gave residents of the housing complex the opportunity to take part in shaping what would become permanent fixtures in their daily environment.

The Weinberg Foundation has awarded $2.75 million in grants to six nonprofits in Israel over three years to help strengthen these organizations that serve LGBTQ individuals. This includes increasing access to mental health, clinical, and other services; emergency and temporary housing; employment training; and educational programs for youth. The Foundation also hopes to encourage other philanthropies to further fund such efforts.

In response to the devastation and loss of life caused by Hurricane Ian in late September, the Foundation has granted $250,000 in funding to support relief efforts in severely hit communities. Funds will support both short-term needs—including shelter for those displaced from their homes, emergency food, and case management—as well as longer-term responses, such as rebuilding housing and vital infrastructure, as well as ongoing care for those affected.

In the United States, the Weinberg Foundation leads the National Affinity Group on Jewish Poverty, a group of funders, Jewish Federations, direct service providers, researchers, media outlets, and advocates dedicated to fighting poverty in the American Jewish community. With the help of a $250,000 grant from the Weinberg Foundation, Mental Health Kokua (MHK) acquired state and county resources that helped expand the state’s Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program in central Maui and Lahaina, Maui. This program works to prevent incarceration for people with mental illness who are also without housing by connecting them with social services. MHK has partnered with the Maui County Police Department, the State Department of Health, and Ka Hale A Ke Ola—another grantee—in this pursuit.

Over the last year, House of Ruth Maryland (HRM) has increased the number of domestic violence survivors it has helped by 6 percent from 2021—serving 11,583 adults and children so far. While many such agencies across the country shut down or severely restricted operations during the pandemic, HRM kept services operating at full capacity. Still, it is taking longer for women to reach safety than before the pandemic.
