After the pandemic forced the postponement of last year’s Biennial Community Gathering in Baltimore, the Foundation sincerely hoped to be able to host an in-person gathering in November 2021. Unfortunately, in response to ongoing concerns involving COVID, we will be holding this event virtually.

As part of a comprehensive effort to add a mission-driven component to the Foundation’s respective departments and everyday work, the investments team began working on a plan to make diversity and inclusion a major part of the Foundation’s portfolio. Now in the third year of this initiative, the Foundation has already surpassed its five-year goal. Nearly 30 percent of the Foundation’s investment fund managers are currently led by women or people of color, or both. Weinberg Foundation grantee Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey recently completed the construction of Weinberg Commons, an affordable housing apartment building for older adults, 55 and older, as well as adults, 21 and older, with developmental disabilities.

In Chicago, Weinberg Foundation grantee North Lawndale Employment Network recently celebrated the grand opening of its new workforce campus, which now houses all programs—the Financial Opportunity Center, as well as all employment, social enterprise, and re-entry and safety programs—under one roof.

This summer, The Maryland School for the Blind held summer programs in its library—the 16th library renovated as part of the Baltimore Elementary and Middle School Library Project. The library offered four weeks of in-person, daily programs based on the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), which provides a specialized set of vision-related skills for blind and visually impaired students.

The Weinberg Foundation recently announced the promotion of Aaron Merki to the role of chief program officer. Mr. Merki has led the program team in distributing approximately $130 million in annual grants, all focused on improving the lives of people experiencing poverty in the United States and Israel. Under his leadership,
the Foundation has prioritized strategic and collaborative approaches to grantmaking focused on achieving measurable impacts within the communities the Foundation serves.
