Our Commitment to
the Jewish Community

In the late 1930s, Harry Weinberg pledged his then-modest assets to enable many German Jews to reach safe haven in America. As Harry’s means increased over many years, so did his support of the Jewish community. This commitment remains at the core of the Weinberg Foundation’s identity. 

In the United States and Israel, the Foundation supports nonprofits that help people within the Jewish community achieve economic stability and well-being. Grants to support the Jewish community align with the Foundation’s focus areas of Housing, Health, Jobs, Education, and Aging. 

In Israel, we invest in improving the lives of older adults; connecting people with jobs; and addressing trauma and providing mental health care. The Foundation also supports signature efforts to build and strengthen leadership and collaboration across sectors and communities.  

In the United States, the Foundation’s grantmaking in the Jewish community focuses on addressing poverty, combatting antisemitism, and strengthening the Jewish nonprofit sector, as well as several signature initiatives across these three areas. 

Key Strategies and Initiatives

   

We aim to build knowledge and awareness about poverty in the U.S. Jewish community and support culturally appropriate direct services to meet basic needs.

Together Ending Need

In partnership with the Jewish Funders Network, the Foundation launched this collaborative effort in 2019 to focus on poverty in the Jewish community. Together Ending Need aims to improve knowledge and data and change the narrative on Jewish poverty in the United States and to convene funders, institutions, and direct service agencies to address this issue.
We support efforts to develop the next generation of leaders, build organizational capacity, and promote inclusion in the Jewish nonprofit sector.

Leading Edge

This nonprofit helps Jewish organizations attract, develop, and retain top talent by offering programs for onboarding new CEOs, strengthening partnerships between lay leaders and professionals, and conducting original research.

We seek to ensure the safety of the Jewish community by tracking and responding to antisemitic incidents; provide security training; and develop shared understanding and partnerships with other communities.

The Shalom Hartman Institute

The Foundation supported the launch of the Shalom Hartman Institute’s Black-Jewish Leadership Initiative, which brings together leaders from the Black and Jewish communities, as well as Black Jewish leaders, to share and learn from one another.
