Regional Business Magazine, SmartCEO, Honors Weinberg Foundation President as CEO of the Year

Rachel Garbow Monroe, Weinberg Foundation President and CEO, has been selected by SmartCEO, a regional business magazine and website, as its 2016 Baltimore SmartCEO of the Year. SmartCEO recognized Monroe at its Circle of Excellence Awards, held on Tuesday, November 15, at Baltimore’s B&O Railroad Museum. She becomes the 14th SmartCEO of the Year recipient in Baltimore. Other recipients have included Kevin Plank of Under Armour and Art Modell of the Baltimore Ravens.

Each year, SmartCEO magazine’s editorial staff names a CEO of the Year—“…CEOs who are true leaders among their peers… They lead more than just companies; they are true stewards of the region, lead industries in new directions, and possess the highest qualities of a leader.” Among other factors, the magazine cited Monroe’s leadership, overseeing “…the growth and transformation of the Weinberg Foundation into a well-run and professional organization providing in excess of $100 million in grants annually.” In addition to serving as the chief steward of the Weinberg Foundation’s $2.1 billion legacy, the magazine highlighted Monroe’s emphasis on kindness; “—it’s a daily goal and a bedrock of Monroe’s leadership philosophy.” In 2005, Monroe was hired by the Weinberg Foundation as its first chief operating officer. Five years later, when the board restructured, Monroe was named as the Foundation’s first non-trustee president and CEO.

SmartCEO magazine is published on a bimonthly basis with editions in four major markets: Baltimore SmartCEO, New York SmartCEO, Philadelphia SmartCEO, and Washington, DC SmartCEO.
